Cycling holidays on the Canal du Midi

Ventenac en Minervois is a great base from which to explore this region on bikes, so why not take advantage with one of our Bike Breaks? You can come especially for a cycling holiday, or enjoy a few bike rides as a break during a motoring holiday. Either way, we can organise the bike hire from Mellow Velos in the next village of Paraza. They’ve a wide choice of bikes, which they will deliver here when you arrive at Les Cordelines – and they’ll pick them up after you leave.

The great thing is that you don’t have to carry all of your belongings with you every time you go off on your bike – there’s no need to cram clothes into panniers each morning, no need to limit how much you bring with you. Instead, you can just relax and enjoy any one of a couple of dozen circular tours of the area, such as:

  • A gentle 15km trip along to Canal du Midi to Lac Jouarres for lunch in the lakeside restaurant La Guinguette du Lac, then a 17km ride back over country roads through lovely scenery
  • An easy 25km ride into the charming town of Narbonne, travelling along the Canal du Midi, and the Canal de la Robine. There’s plenty to explore in Narbonne – maybe go on Thursday or Sunday to browse round the open-air market. Then lunch, before a 20km ride back on open roads to Ventenac
  • A more strenuous 20km ride up into the Languedoc National Park and the stunning Cathar village of Minerve. The final four or five kilometres are fairly steep – averaging 3% gradients – but the reward is truly spectacular scenery. And it’s downhill all the way home!
  • An equally challenging 40km round trip to the beautiful Abbaye de Fontfroide in the Lower Corbières. There are a couple of fairly steep climbs both before and after the Abbaye itself – each time climbing then descending 80m in about 2000m
  • A longer ride, with a more testing climb in the middle, to see La Curiosité de L’Auriol, where the local geography makes it seem like gravity is being defied.

After your ride you can unwind by our swimming pool with a cool drink before strolling into Ventenac, or cycling along to one of the nearby villages, for a relaxing supper. And if you want a break from the cycling, you can just spend a day by the pool.

We can provide detailed descriptions and maps of the routes, along with visitor information on specific attractions or activities during your visit. We’ll make sure you have fresh iced water to take with you each morning, and we’ll even lend you a pay-as-you go French mobile, with 10€ of credit, to use for local calls. And if you need to wash any of your clothes, we’ve a washing machine and tumble drier that you can use: there is a small charge 3€ a load including detergent and conditioner.

There’s no extra charge over our normal B&B rates. You can come for as many days as you want, and start your trip on any day of the week that suits you – Ryanair is usually cheaper in the middle of the week. We can also arrange for a taxi to take you from and to Carcassonne or Bezier airports, or Narbonne rail station.

Call us for more information, or email Kate@LesCordelines.com. We look forward to welcoming you soon.
